Planet Zoo - Controls

Planet Zoo Controls Guide

Planet Zoo has a surprisingly deep control system because the same controller has to handle zoo management, camera movement, object placement, paths, terrain editing and barrier construction. Once you understand the basic selection buttons and the radial menu, the Console Edition becomes much easier to manage.

This Planet Zoo controls guide focuses on the PlayStation 5 layout shown in the in game help screens, while also explaining the special controls that appear when using construction tools.

Planet Zoo Basic Controls on PS5

Action PS5 Control
Move Camera Left Stick
Pitch / Rotate Camera Right Stick
Zoom Out L2
Zoom In R2
Open Browser / Change Tab L1 / R1
Select X
Select Multiple Hold X
Cancel / Close / Deselect Circle
Open Radial Menu Hold Triangle
Delete Triangle where available
Time Controls Hold Square
Vertical Camera Movement Hold Square
Zoo Management Touch Pad
Pause Options Button
UI Navigation D Pad

Several buttons are context sensitive. Triangle, Square and the shoulder buttons can perform different actions depending on whether you are browsing animals, placing scenery, editing terrain or working with paths.

How the Radial Menu Works

Holding Triangle opens the radial menu. This is one of the most important shortcuts on console because it gives you quick access to frequently used management and construction tools without moving through several browser screens.

Recent Console Edition updates also added direct Path, Terrain and Barrier editing options to the default radial menu, so learning this shortcut can save a lot of menu navigation.

Planet Zoo Multi Select Controls

Multi Select is useful when moving scenery groups, editing several objects or managing a larger section of your zoo.

Action PS5 Control
Select X
Select Multiple Hold X
Cancel / Close / Deselect Circle
Confirm Selection Hold Square
Clear Selection R3
Move Camera Left Stick
Pitch / Rotate Camera Right Stick
UI Navigation D Pad

Holding X rather than tapping it is particularly useful for builders. It lets you gather multiple pieces into one selection instead of repeatedly editing objects one at a time.

Object Placement Controls

Planet Zoo gives console players much more control over object placement than a simple place and rotate system.

Action PS5 Control
Place Object X
Move Object Along Axis Hold X
Cancel / Close / Deselect Circle
Radial Menu Hold Triangle
Rotate Object Hold Square
Move Object Vertically Hold Square
Rotation Snap L1 / R1
Move Object Left Stick
Pitch / Rotate Camera Right Stick

The actual function of Square changes according to the current placement mode. Watch the button prompt beside the object because it tells you whether you are rotating or changing vertical position.

Advanced Move Controls

Advanced Move is one of the most useful building tools once you start creating detailed habitats, custom buildings and scenery.

Action PS5 Control
Place X
Delete Triangle
Open Radial Menu Hold Triangle
Change Axis L1 / R1
Move Object Along Axis Left Stick
Pitch / Rotate Camera Right Stick

Changing the active axis is the key to precise construction. Rather than trying to drag scenery freely into place, switch axes and adjust one direction at a time.

Planet Zoo Path Tool Controls

Paths are one of the systems new players usually need the most time to learn. The console controls provide dedicated commands for path joining, grids, slopes and height.

Action PS5 Control
Place Path X
Detach From Path Circle
Delete Triangle
Open Radial Menu Hold Triangle
Select Grid Square
Slope / Change Height Hold Square
Path Joining On / Off L3
Select Grid R3
Move Camera / Position Path Left Stick

If a path keeps snapping somewhere you do not want it, toggle Path Joining off. If you are trying to create a neat plaza beside a building, grid based paths are usually easier than placing every segment freehand.

Terrain Tool Controls

Action PS5 Control
Edit Terrain X
Cancel / Close / Deselect Circle
Open Radial Menu Hold Triangle
Size / Intensity Hold Square
Change Terrain Edit Mode L1 / R1
UI Navigation D Pad

The shoulder buttons cycle between terrain editing functions while Square gives access to brush size or intensity. This makes it much faster to switch between broad landscaping and smaller corrective work.

Barrier Tool Controls

Action PS5 Control
Place Barrier X
Multi Select Hold X
Cancel / Close / Deselect Circle
Move Hold Triangle
Delete Triangle
Edit Height Hold Square
Select All Connected Barriers R3
Move Barrier Left Stick

Selecting all connected barriers is particularly useful when you discover that an entire habitat wall is too low or needs replacing.

Barrier Gate Placement Controls

Action PS5 Control
Place Gate X
Multi Select Hold X
Cancel / Close / Deselect Circle
Rotate Gate Hold Square
Rotate Left Stick

A habitat needs a valid gate before staff can properly access it. Make sure the gate connects to your path network so keepers and vets can actually reach the animals.

Planet Zoo PC Controls

Players using keyboard and mouse have a different layout with several useful management shortcuts.

Action PC Control
Select / Confirm Left Mouse Button
Cancel / Close Esc or Right Mouse Button
Pan Camera W, A, S, D
Pause P
Change Simulation Speed O
Group Edit Mode R
Help F1
Zoopedia F3
Heat Maps H
Multi Select I
Undo Ctrl + Z
Redo Ctrl + Y
Duplicate Object / Building Ctrl + D
Delete Selected Object Delete
Zoo Management Shortcuts 0 to 9

Can You Use Keyboard and Mouse on Planet Zoo Console?

Planet Zoo Console Edition was specifically redesigned for controller play, with radial menus and context sensitive controls that make complex building possible from a gamepad. The PS5 and Xbox versions therefore do not require a mouse to build detailed zoos.

The help menu is worth keeping in mind because the controls change when you move between object placement, paths, terrain and barriers.

Why Do the Buttons Keep Changing?

Planet Zoo uses contextual controls. X may select something while browsing, place an object while building and confirm a path while using the path editor. Triangle may delete an object with a tap but open the radial menu when held.

This keeps the controller layout manageable despite the large number of tools available.

How to Make Planet Zoo Controls Easier

Start by memorizing only six things: X selects, Circle backs out, Triangle opens the radial menu when held, the left stick moves, the right stick controls the camera and L1/R1 frequently switch tabs or modes.

After those become automatic, learn the tool specific shortcuts for paths, barriers and advanced object movement. Trying to memorize every command before building anything usually makes the controls feel more complicated than they really are.
