Ground Zero Hero - Controls

Ground Zero Hero Controls Guide

Ground Zero Hero keeps its actual gameplay controls deliberately simple. Unlike many action roguelites, you are not constantly pressing attack buttons, cycling weapons or manually firing every mutation. Your main job is movement. The mutations and offensive effects you collect during a run do most of the attacking automatically while you concentrate on positioning, collecting radioactive material and staying out of the horde.

That simplicity is important because the screen can become extremely busy once large groups of mutants, projectiles, pickups and mutation effects start overlapping. Ground Zero Hero supports controller play as well as keyboard controls, and the default setup is easy to learn within a few minutes.

The most important point is that normal combat does not require a dedicated attack button. Mutations activate automatically according to their own behaviour, range and timing.

How to Move

Use the left stick to move in any direction.

Movement is effectively your main combat input. You are constantly deciding whether to move toward radioactive pickups, circle around a horde, reach a safe, approach an event or escape toward a bunker before nighttime enemies overwhelm the run.

Avoid Sharp Direction Changes inside a Horde

Once enemies surround you, rapidly reversing direction can send you directly into another group. Try to maintain a clear lane around the outside of the crowd instead.

Keep Moving while Collecting Radiation

Enemies leave behind material that fuels your mutation progression. Sweep through dropped resources when you have room, but do not dive into a dense pack just because a large amount is sitting there.

Do You Have to Aim or Shoot?

No traditional shooting input is required during normal runs. Ground Zero Hero follows the automatic attack style used by survivor games. Your mutations fire, strike, summon or trigger according to their individual behaviour.

This means positioning matters more than mechanical aiming. If a mutation attacks in a particular area or direction, move so enemies naturally enter its effective range.

How Mutations Work with the Controls

When your mutation meter fills, the action pauses long enough for you to select an upgrade or new mutation from the choices presented.

After choosing it, the mutation becomes part of your automatic combat setup. You do not need to remember another attack button every time your build grows.

Movement Changes with Your Build

A close range mutation rewards passing near groups. A projectile focused build often works better while circling farther away. Summoned or area based effects may let you concentrate almost entirely on avoiding contact.

The controls stay simple, but the way you move should change according to the mutations you have collected.

Keyboard Controls

Action Keyboard / Mouse
Move Up W / Up Arrow
Move Down S / Down Arrow
Move Left A / Left Arrow
Move Right D / Right Arrow
Navigate Menus Mouse / Keyboard

Ground Zero Hero can be comfortably played with a keyboard, controller or very minimal input because moment to moment gameplay revolves primarily around movement.

How to Collect Mutation Material

You collect the radioactive material dropped by enemies by moving close enough to it.

There is no separate pickup button required. Once enough material has been absorbed, you receive another mutation choice.

Do Not Collect Everything Immediately

Material can remain scattered around the battlefield, so sometimes the safer decision is to leave it temporarily and return once the horde has moved away.

How Safes Work

Safes appear around the wasteland and can reward useful currency. Opening one requires you to remain within its active area while the process completes.

The challenge is therefore movement rather than button input. Circle inside the required zone while avoiding enemies instead of standing still beside the safe.

Open Safes Earlier in a Run

Safes become much harder to manage once the battlefield is packed with enemies. Taking advantage of one while the pressure is lower gives you far more room to move.

Using Bunkers

Bunkers become especially important as the day and night cycle progresses. Night introduces much more dangerous enemies, and entering a bunker gives you a safer alternative to remaining outside.

The game may also allow a bunker to function as a useful stopping point during a run.

Do Not Wait until the Horde Blocks the Route

When you already know you want the bunker, begin moving toward it before nighttime pressure becomes extreme.

Why There Is No Dodge Button

Ground Zero Hero does not revolve around a conventional manual dodge command. Avoiding damage comes primarily from movement and positioning.

That makes your route through the horde important. Instead of waiting for an attack and pressing a dodge button, create enough space that the dangerous contact never happens.

Pause Controls

Ground Zero Hero can be paused during offline play. Use the platform's pause or menu button whenever you need to stop a run.

Because the game can become visually chaotic, taking a moment to pause can also help when you need to step away without sacrificing a promising run.

Controller Support

Ground Zero Hero supports controller play on PC and is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles and Nintendo Switch 2.

The PC version also supports full controller functionality, and the game works particularly well with a controller because almost all moment to moment movement can be handled with a single thumbstick.
