NEIGHBORS: Suburban Warfare - Controls

NEIGHBORS Suburban Warfare controls guide for PlayStation, Xbox style controllers and PC

In NEIGHBORS: Suburban Warfare, knowing your controls can be the difference between protecting your house and watching the other team tear through it. You need to move quickly, grab useful objects, equip traps and activate your character's special ability without fumbling through the inventory.

This guide covers the controller bindings shown in the game's settings menu, explains how item handling works and answers common questions about sprinting, throwing objects and deploying traps.

The PlayStation buttons below are taken from the in game controller settings. Xbox buttons are their corresponding physical equivalents, not independently verified Xbox default settings. PC keyboard assignments should be checked in the game's own settings.

Several actions share a button because they depend on what you are holding or doing. R2, for example, serves as the primary action and is also used for handling held objects. L1 appears for both equipping hands and opening item selection.

How to Move, Sprint and Crouch

Use the Left Stick to move and the Right Stick to look around. Press Cross to jump, Circle to crouch and L3 to sprint.

Sprinting is useful when crossing open ground or reaching an objective, but moving quickly is not always the best choice. Crouching can help you position yourself behind furniture, walls and other cover before approaching a contested area.

How to Pick Up and Interact With Objects

Press Square to interact with doors and other usable objects. The opening tutorial specifically shows Square as the button for interacting with doors.

Watch for the interaction prompt when approaching an object. If nothing happens, move closer and make sure you are aiming at the part of the object the game recognises.

How to Equip Items and Switch Inventory Slots

Press L1 to open item selection. You can also use D Pad Right to equip the next item and D Pad Left to equip the previous one.

The inventory bar appears along the bottom of the screen. Check which slot is selected before using an item, especially when switching between combat equipment and traps.

How to Throw and Drop Objects

The controller menu lists Hold R2 for throwing a held object and R2 for dropping a held object. These actions depend on the object currently in your hands.

Triangle is also assigned to Drop in the general controls. Because the game separates this from the specific Drop Held Object action, pay attention to the on screen prompt rather than assuming both buttons always do the same thing.

How to Deploy Bear Traps

The tutorial demonstrates a clear sequence for placing traps. Open your inventory with L1, equip the bear trap, aim at the ground and use R2 to deploy it.

A placement preview appears before deployment. In the tutorial objective shown, you must place three bear traps to help protect the house. The objective counter tracks how many have been deployed.

Special Abilities and Combat Actions

R1 activates your character's special ability. The exact effect depends on the character you are playing, so check the ability icon and its availability before relying on it.

The gameplay screenshots also show combat actions such as Jab and Uppercut beside the relevant controller prompts. These are contextual combat inputs, so refer to the current equipment and on screen HUD rather than treating them as universal buttons for every item.

How to Change Controller Settings

Open Settings and select the Controller tab. The menu includes individual bindings and a Right Stick Deadzone adjustment. The supplied screenshots show that deadzone set to 25 percent, which is the displayed setting rather than a recommended value for everyone.

If your camera moves without touching the stick, increasing the deadzone may help. If aiming feels unresponsive near the centre, try reducing it slightly and testing the result.
