GreedFall: The Dying World - Controls

GreedFall: The Dying World Controls

This complete GreedFall: The Dying World controls guide explains how to explore, enter stealth, track objectives, manage companions, pause tactical combat, change controlled characters, target enemies, switch shortcut bars, and navigate menus.

Unlike the first GreedFall, The Dying World uses a party-focused real-time-with-pause combat system. You can directly control different companions, queue abilities from the shortcut bar, pause the action to reassess a fight, or allow party members to behave more independently.

Platform note: The attached screenshots show the default PlayStation 5 layout. Xbox buttons below use the equivalent controller positions. PC keyboard and mouse controls can be rebound, so always check Settings > Game Controls after updates or when using a custom control profile.

Exploration and General Controls

Action PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X|S PC
Move character Left Stick Left Stick WASD
Control camera Right Stick Right Stick Hold Right Mouse Button and move mouse
Sprint L3 LS Check current binding
Enter or leave stealth L1 + Cross LB + A Check current binding
Activate tracking L1 + Circle LB + B Check current binding
Split or reform party L1 + Square LB + X Check current binding
Toggle autonomous party behavior L1 + Triangle LB + Y Check current binding
Interaction option 1 Triangle Y Context-sensitive
Interaction option 2 Circle B Context-sensitive
Interaction option 3 Square X Context-sensitive
Interaction option 4 Cross A Context-sensitive
Open game menu Touchpad View Button Check current binding

The four interaction buttons are deliberately context-sensitive. Their exact purpose changes during conversations, exploration, investigations, object interactions and scripted sequences. Read the on-screen prompt rather than assuming Cross or A is always the confirm button.

Party Management Controls

Party control is central to The Dying World. You can keep everyone grouped, separate companions for positioning, or let party members behave autonomously when you do not want to micromanage every action.

Action PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X|S
Split or form party L1 + Square LB + X
Toggle autonomous party L1 + Triangle LB + Y
Control next character D-Pad Right D-Pad Right
Control previous character D-Pad Left D-Pad Left
Change loadout or shortcut set L1 + R1 LB + RB

Useful habit: Switch characters before a fight begins. Place tougher melee companions near the expected engagement point while keeping ranged or support characters farther back.

Tactical View and Play/Pause Are Different Commands

Entering Tactical View and pausing combat are not the same action. Tactical View changes how you inspect the battlefield and issue commands. The separate Play/Pause input controls whether queued actions are currently progressing.

Repeatedly pressing the Tactical View button when you only want to resume combat may pull you out of the tactical interface. Use the dedicated Play/Pause input when your selected combat profile supports tactical pausing.

Combat Shortcut Controls

The shortcut system provides twelve controller combinations. The skill, consumable or ability assigned to each slot depends on the selected character and configured shortcut bar.

Shortcut PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X|S
Shortcut 1 Cross A
Shortcut 2 Circle B
Shortcut 3 Square X
Shortcut 4 Triangle Y
Shortcut 5 L2 + Cross LT + A
Shortcut 6 L2 + Circle LT + B
Shortcut 7 L2 + Square LT + X
Shortcut 8 L2 + Triangle LT + Y
Shortcut 9 R2 + Cross RT + A
Shortcut 10 R2 + Circle RT + B
Shortcut 11 R2 + Square RT + X
Shortcut 12 R2 + Triangle RT + Y

Place frequently used abilities on the four unmodified face buttons. Reserve L2 and R2 combinations for situational powers, consumables and abilities that have longer cooldowns.

Action PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X|S

Shortcut Menu 2 Square X
Shortcut Menu 3 Triangle Y

Next sub-tab R2 RT

Can You Remap the Controls?

Keyboard and mouse bindings can be customized from the Game Controls menu. Controller support uses a purpose-built shortcut system, although available remapping options may be more limited than on PC.

After changing a binding, test Tactical View, Play/Pause, character switching and every shortcut modifier before continuing. These commands overlap heavily, so an inconvenient change can make party management harder during combat.

Best Controller Setup Recommendations

  • Keep Tactical View and Play/Pause on separate, easy-to-remember inputs.
  • Place basic attacks and frequently repeated abilities in Shortcuts 1–4.
  • Use L2 shortcuts for defensive skills, healing and support actions.
  • Use R2 shortcuts for high-impact attacks and longer-cooldown abilities.
  • Keep character switching on the D-Pad so you can change party members quickly.
  • Test camera sensitivity in both exploration and Tactical View.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you pause combat in GreedFall: The Dying World?

Use the dedicated Play/Pause input while in combat. On the PlayStation layout shown in the game, it is assigned to the Options button. Entering or leaving Tactical View uses R1 and is a separate command.

How do you switch characters?

Use D-Pad Right to control the next party member and D-Pad Left to return to the previous one.

How do you enter stealth?

Hold L1 and press Cross on PlayStation, or hold LB and press A on Xbox.

How do you activate tracking?

Press L1 + Circle on PlayStation or LB + B on Xbox.

How do you split the party?

Press L1 + Square on PlayStation or LB + X on Xbox. Use the same command to reform the group.

Why do the face buttons perform different actions?

The game uses contextual interactions and combat shortcut bars. Cross, Circle, Square and Triangle can therefore perform different actions depending on whether you are exploring, talking, navigating menus or controlling combat.

Is a controller or keyboard and mouse better?

A controller offers comfortable movement and direct camera control during exploration. Keyboard and mouse can be convenient when selecting battlefield positions and managing numerous shortcuts. The better option depends on how much tactical micromanagement you prefer.
