John Carpenter's Toxic Commando - Controls

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando Controls Guide for PlayStation and Xbox

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando throws you into chaotic battles against hordes of infected enemies, where shooting accurately is only half the challenge. You also need to manage your equipment, help your squad and drive through dangerous environments without getting your vehicle stuck.

This Toxic Commando controls guide covers the PlayStation controller layout shown in the game, the corresponding Xbox buttons, and the differences between fighting on foot and driving. The screenshots use Controller Preset 1, so other presets may change the button assignments.

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando Player Controls

These are the controls for moving, fighting and supporting your team while outside a vehicle. The PlayStation inputs are taken from the game's Controller Presets screen, while the Xbox column shows the corresponding controller buttons.

The Xbox column translates the PlayStation button positions rather than representing a separately verified Xbox control screen. The navigation button may differ because Xbox controllers do not have a PlayStation touchpad.

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando Vehicle Controls

Vehicles have their own control layout. The triggers handle acceleration and deceleration, while the shoulder buttons operate the winch. Several buttons also gain additional functions when you are driving or occupying another seat.

The vehicle layout also shows contextual actions for looking out of the window and switching from a turret to the primary weapon. These depend on your current seat and the equipment available in the vehicle.

How to Use the Winch in Toxic Commando

The winch is one of the most useful vehicle tools when you encounter difficult terrain or need to recover from a bad position.

Hold L1 on PlayStation or LB on Xbox to aim the winch. Press R1 or RB to launch it, then hold that button to pull. The left shoulder button also handles detaching the winch.

Pay attention to the available attachment point before launching. A poorly chosen angle may not help you recover the vehicle.

How to Change Seats and Exit a Vehicle

Hold Cross on PlayStation or A on Xbox to change seats. Press Square or X to enter a vehicle, and hold the same button to exit.

The gameplay interface also displays vehicle shortcuts along the bottom of the screen, making it easier to identify the available actions while driving.

How to Use Abilities, Grenades and Heavy Weapons

Press L1 and R1 together on PlayStation, or LB and RB on Xbox, to activate your character's ability. R1 or RB alone throws a grenade, while L1 or LB is used for pushing and melee attacks.

Press Triangle or Y to switch weapons. Holding that button selects the heavy weapon. Learn the difference between pressing and holding so you do not equip the wrong weapon during a large encounter.

How to Heal and Communicate With Your Team

Press D Pad Down to heal while on foot. When inside a vehicle, the same direction is labelled Use Medical Gear.

Use D Pad Up to mark a location or target. Holding it opens the communication wheel, which is useful for coordinating with teammates without relying entirely on voice chat.

Can You Change the Controls in Toxic Commando?

Yes. The Controller Presets menu shows four available presets, and the game displays separate diagrams for Player and Vehicle controls.

The controls listed here follow Preset 1. If a button behaves differently in your game, check which preset is selected before assuming the control is incorrect.
