Sonic X Shadow Generations actually contains two closely related control systems. Sonic Generations uses the familiar Boost-era Sonic moveset, including jumping, Homing Attacks, Boost, crouching, drifting, Quick Steps and equippable Skills. Shadow Generations keeps the same high-speed foundation but gives Shadow separate Jump and Homing Attack buttons, Chaos Spear, Chaos Control and a growing collection of Doom Powers.
That distinction matters. Sonic is built around preserving momentum through routes, drifting, tricks and Boost management, while Shadow has more combat-oriented inputs and eventually gains traversal abilities that substantially change how White Space and later stages can be approached.
This guide covers the default Standard controller configuration shown in the game's Control Settings, including PlayStation and matching Xbox/PC controller buttons. It also explains contextual actions such as Drop Dash, Spin Dash, Chaos Control, Doom Spears, Doom Blast, Doom Surf, Doom Morph and Doom Wing. Controls are customizable, so a remapped setup can differ from the defaults listed below.

Moving at High Speed
The left stick handles movement in both campaigns. Unlike a conventional platformer, however, steering becomes less forgiving as speed increases. Small corrections are usually better than holding the stick fully left or right.
Steer before You Reach the Obstacle
At Boost speed, reacting when Sonic or Shadow is already beside a barrier is often too late. Read the route ahead and begin positioning early.
Use Gentle Stick Movements on Narrow Paths
Large directional inputs can throw you into hazards, especially on rails, narrow platforms and fast 3D sections.
Let the Stage Carry Your Momentum
Springs, launchers, loops and downhill sections already provide speed. Constantly forcing movement can make precise routes harder rather than faster.
Jumping
Press Cross or A to jump. Sonic can also use Square or X as his second Jump/Homing Attack input under the Standard configuration, while Shadow keeps Cross/A specifically for jumping and Square/X for his airborne Homing Attack.
Do Not Hold Forward through Every Jump
Some platforming sections require a controlled landing rather than maximum distance. Ease the stick toward neutral when you need to drop onto a small platform.
Jump before a Hazard, Not on Top of It
At high speed your character covers substantial ground during the input animation. Jump slightly earlier than you would in a slower platform game.
Use Air Control Carefully
Small corrections can rescue a landing. Large ones can turn a good trajectory into a missed platform.
Homing Attacks
A Homing Attack targets a nearby enemy, spring or compatible object while airborne.
Wait for a Valid Target
Pressing the Homing Attack too early can send you forward without connecting to the object you intended to reach.
Use Enemies as Traversal Points
Enemy chains often function as part of the intended route. Look beyond the first robot and plan where the entire sequence leads.
Shadow's Separate Button Gives More Control
Because Shadow jumps with Cross/A and performs his Homing Attack with Square/X, you can make a second aerial input without automatically triggering the Homing Attack.
Boost
Hold R2 or RT to Boost while the Boost Gauge contains energy.
Boost on Clear Ground
A long straight section is ideal. A narrow platform covered in hazards usually is not.
Release Boost before Technical Platforming
Trying to preserve maximum speed through every section can cost more time than slowing down briefly and landing correctly.
Refill Sonic's Boost Gauge Actively
Sonic restores Boost by collecting Rings, defeating enemies, performing tricks and drifting.
Shadow's Gauge Works Differently
Shadow replenishes Boost through Rings and Chaos Control, making his two gauges more closely connected.
Crouching
Press Circle or B to crouch. Sonic can also crouch by pressing down on the movement stick in relevant situations.
Use Crouch to Enter a Spin
Classic Sonic can transition into his rolling movement while running, allowing him to smash through compatible enemies and obstacles.
Do Not Forget Crouch during Low Routes
Some stage routes are designed around sliding or fitting underneath hazards rather than jumping over everything.
Quick Step and Step Controls
Use L1/LB and R1/RB to move rapidly left or right during high-speed sections.
Quick Step instead of Steering Hard
When lanes are clearly defined, the shoulder buttons provide a cleaner lane change than pushing the analog stick aggressively sideways.
Read Obstacles in Pairs
Many fast sections present one hazard followed immediately by another. After stepping once, be prepared to return toward the original lane.
Use Both Inputs for Freestyle Trick Recovery
During Modern Sonic's trick sequences, pressing the left and right Quick Step commands together at the correct moment before landing can restore some Boost Gauge.
Shadow Uses Steps beyond Normal Running
Shadow's Step inputs also gain contextual functions with certain Doom Powers, including Doom Surf and Doom Wing activation.
Drifting with Sonic
Hold L2 or LT to Drift with Sonic when the stage supports the action.
Begin the Drift before the Tightest Point
Entering a corner already sideways is much easier than trying to correct after Sonic reaches the outside barrier.
Control the Stick Smoothly
The goal is to maintain the curve rather than repeatedly overcorrect from side to side.
Drifting Helps Restore Boost
A successful drift is not merely a steering tool. It also contributes to Sonic's Boost Gauge, making clean corners valuable for both speed and resource management.
Using Sonic Skills
Press Triangle or Y to use the currently equipped Skill when that Skill requires an active input.
Sonic Generations includes a Skill customization system for both Classic and Modern Sonic. Skills have point costs, and a Skill Set can contain up to 100 points worth of equipped abilities.
Build Different Skill Sets
One setup can focus on safety while another is designed around faster stage clears or a particular challenge.
Read ACT Restrictions
Individual Skills can differ in where they are usable, so check their description before designing a route around them.
Remember Online Ranking Restrictions
Skills cannot be used in Sonic Generations' Online Mode ranking runs, so leaderboard practice should also include runs without Skill assistance.
Classic Sonic's Spin Dash
Classic Sonic can charge a Spin Dash from a stationary position and release it to launch forward.
Use It after Losing Momentum
The Spin Dash is excellent when a mistake leaves Classic Sonic stopped on a slope or before a loop.
Do Not Charge Longer than Necessary
A huge charge is pointless when a short burst already gives enough speed for the next obstacle.
Use Slopes
Momentum matters. A properly timed Spin Dash combined with terrain can carry Classic Sonic through sections much faster than repeated jumping.
Drop Dash
Classic and Modern Sonic can perform a Drop Dash by holding the Jump input while airborne and landing while the action remains charged.
Classic Sonic requires the relevant Drop Dash Skill to be equipped before he can use it.
Use It to Preserve Momentum after Landing
Instead of touching down and accelerating again, the Drop Dash turns the landing itself into forward speed.
Do Not Charge It before a Precision Landing
If you need to stop on a tiny platform, releasing into a Drop Dash can immediately send you off the opposite edge.
Shadow's Chaos Spear
Press Triangle or Y to use Chaos Spear.
Use It for More than Combat
Chaos Spear can interact with switches and other stage objects as well as enemies.
Hold for Doom Spears after the Power Unlocks
With Doom Spears available, hold the Chaos Spear button to lock onto as many as five targets, then release to launch the volley.
Lock onto Multiple Objects before Releasing
When several targets are available, give the targeting system enough time to mark them instead of firing immediately at the first one.
Chaos Control
Press L2 or LT when Shadow's Chaos Gauge is full to activate Chaos Control.
Chaos Control temporarily stops time, freezing enemies and moving stage mechanisms while Shadow remains able to act.
Use It on Moving Hazards
Freezing platforms, obstacles or environmental gimmicks can turn an awkward timing challenge into a straightforward route.
Look for Hidden Light Trails
Special routes can become visible during Chaos Control. Do not assume its only purpose is freezing enemies.
Use It before the Timing Window Is Gone
If the intended mechanism is already behind you, activating Chaos Control may provide little value. Read the stage ahead.
Shadow Doom Powers
Shadow gradually awakens Doom Powers as the story progresses. These abilities are both combat tools and traversal mechanics, and several reveal routes through White Space that were previously inaccessible.
Revisit White Space after Every Major Power Unlock
An area that looked decorative earlier may contain a collectible, route or challenge once the appropriate Doom Power becomes available.
Doom Blast
Doom Blast builds on Shadow's Homing Attack.
Lock onto an enemy and hold the Homing Attack button to charge the launch. After Shadow sends the enemy into the air, choose a direction and attack again to knock the target away.
Think about Where the Enemy Will Land
The directional follow-up is part of the move. Use it deliberately rather than automatically sending every enemy forward.
Use the Contextual Stomp Follow-Up
When the situation allows it, the Stomp command can bring Shadow down onto the launched enemy immediately.
Doom Surf
Doom Surf lets Shadow skim rapidly across water.
Press Boost at the Beginning
The initial Boost input quickly accelerates the Doom Surf and helps establish momentum.
Use Step Buttons for the Spin Attack
The left or right Step command can trigger Doom Surf's offensive Spin Attack.
Look Ahead rather than at Shadow
Water routes move quickly. Focus your eyes farther down the course so you can steer before hazards reach you.
Doom Morph
Touching a Morph Ball transforms Shadow, allowing him to travel along contaminated surfaces, walls and passages that his normal form cannot traverse.
Follow the Contaminated Surface
Doom Morph changes the traversal rules. Routes that appear impossible for ordinary Shadow may be the intended path in Morph form.
Use Morph Balls as Swing Points
Hold the Homing Attack button while facing a Morph Ball to extend toward it and swing.
Release with Momentum
Watch the swing arc and detach toward the destination instead of simply releasing as soon as Shadow connects.
Doom Wing
After Doom Wing becomes available, collect at least 50 Rings and press the left and right Step inputs together to activate it.
Rings are gradually consumed while Doom Wing is active. Hold Boost to glide through the air.
Build a Ring Reserve First
Activating Doom Wing with barely enough Rings leaves little flight time.
Use Height before Speed
A high starting position creates more route options than activating the ability close to the ground.
Watch Ring Consumption
Do not become so focused on a distant collectible that you ignore how quickly your remaining flight time is disappearing.
Reset Camera
Press the right stick to reset or recenter the camera when the current angle becomes awkward.
Use It after Sharp Direction Changes
A quick recenter is often faster than manually rotating the camera back behind the character.
Use It in Shadow's White Space
White Space gives you much more free-camera exploration than a typical action stage, making camera management especially useful while searching for hidden routes.
Menu Controls

How to Remap Controls
Open Options and enter Control Settings. The game provides selectable control types and allows the individual gameplay commands shown in the binding list to be reassigned.
Keep Jump and Homing Attack Comfortable
These are among the most frequently used actions in the entire game. A custom configuration should allow you to transition between them without moving your thumb awkwardly.
Keep Boost on a Trigger if You Like Variable Grip Position
The default R2/RT placement lets your index finger handle Boost while your thumb remains free for Jump, Homing Attack and Skill inputs.
Do Not Forget the Two Campaigns
A configuration that feels perfect for Sonic may be less comfortable for Shadow's Chaos Spear and Chaos Control. Test both campaigns before settling on a final setup.
Restore Defaults if Necessary
The Control Settings screen includes a Restore/Reset to Default command if custom bindings become difficult to remember.

Final Control Advice
For Sonic, learn R2/RT Boost, L2/LT Drift and L1/R1 Quick Step alongside your Jump and Homing Attack inputs. Once those commands become automatic, the fastest stage routes begin to feel much more natural.
For Shadow, memorize Cross/A for Jump, Square/X for Homing Attack, Triangle/Y for Chaos Spear and L2/LT for Chaos Control. The separation between jumping and attacking gives Shadow excellent aerial control once you stop treating him exactly like Sonic.
Finally, revisit the Control Settings whenever a binding feels uncomfortable. Sonic X Shadow Generations is built around repeated stage runs, and a control scheme that feels natural matters enormously when you begin chasing faster times, collectibles and higher ranks.
