Dead Space - Controls

Dead Space Controls

Dead Space uses a context-sensitive controller layout built around precision dismemberment, Kinesis, Stasis and free-flight movement in zero gravity. Isaac moves with the left stick, looks with the right stick, aims with L2 or LT and fires with R2 or RT. Several buttons perform completely different actions while aiming, so understanding those contextual inputs is more important than simply memorising the face buttons.

The controls below apply to the 2023 Dead Space remake using its Default controller preset. The game also offers DS1 and DS2 legacy-style presets, individual button reassignment and separate sensitivity, dead-zone, aim-assist and toggle options.

Dead Space Aiming Controls

Holding the Aim button changes several ordinary controls into weapon or RIG abilities. R1 or RB becomes the equipped weapon's alternate fire, Circle or B controls Kinesis, and Triangle or Y fires Stasis. Releasing Aim returns those buttons to their normal exploration functions.

How to Use Kinesis

Kinesis allows Isaac to pull compatible objects toward him and launch them without spending ammunition. Hold L2 or LT, aim at an object and press Circle or B to grab it. Press R2 or RT while the object is suspended to throw it.

  • Necromorph blades: Pull severed arm blades from the floor and fire them into another enemy.
  • Metal poles: Launch rods and pipes to impale enemies and potentially pin them to surfaces.
  • Explosive canisters: Throw them at clustered enemies for efficient area damage.
  • Fan blades: Use sharp environmental debris as ammunition-free projectiles.
  • Containers and panels: Move loose objects to uncover items or clear blocked spaces.

If Kinesis releases an object instead of throwing it, confirm that you are still holding Aim and press the Fire button rather than pressing the Kinesis button again.

How to Use Stasis

To slow an enemy or machine, hold L2 or LT and press Triangle or Y while aiming at the target. Pressing Triangle or Y without aiming consumes a Stasis Pack and refills Isaac's Stasis energy instead.

Stasis works on both Necromorphs and environmental machinery. Use it on fast-moving enemies to create an easy dismemberment opportunity or on malfunctioning doors, turbines and other hazards when solving engineering puzzles.

Dead Space Zero-Gravity Controls

Unlike the original 2008 release, the remake gives Isaac full six-degrees-of-freedom movement in zero-gravity areas. You can take off, steer freely, roll, boost and use the Align command whenever the environment becomes disorienting.

The function of R2 or RT depends on whether Isaac is aiming. Press it normally while flying to reorient Isaac with a nearby surface; hold Aim first and it becomes the Fire command.

Weapon Selection and Alternate Fire

Isaac can equip up to four weapons in active slots, with each slot assigned to one D-Pad direction. This allows instant switching without opening the inventory.

Every weapon also has a distinct alternate-fire function activated with R1 or RB while aiming. These are not simply stronger versions of normal fire: they can rotate the Plasma Cutter, deploy Line Gun traps, create a Flame Wall, launch Ripper blades or perform other weapon-specific actions.

  • D-Pad Up: Select Weapon Slot 1.
  • D-Pad Right: Select Weapon Slot 2.
  • D-Pad Down: Select Weapon Slot 3.
  • D-Pad Left: Select Weapon Slot 4.
  • Aim + R1 / RB: Activate the selected weapon's alternate fire.

RIG Menu and Locator Controls

Open Isaac's RIG with the touchpad on PlayStation or the View button on Xbox. The RIG contains the inventory, map, mission tracker, database and collected logs. Opening the RIG does not always make Isaac completely safe, so avoid managing items in an uncleared combat area.

Press R3 or RS to activate the Locator. It projects a temporary path toward the currently tracked mission objective. The Locator shows the direct objective route, not every optional room or collectible.

  • Inventory: Manage ammunition, weapons, healing items and Stasis Packs.
  • Map: Inspect floors, doors, rooms, stores, Benches and save stations.
  • Missions: Switch between the main objective and available side missions.
  • Database: Review collected text, audio and video logs.
  • Locator: Display the route to the tracked mission.

Controller Layout Presets

Dead Space includes several predefined controller schemes. Select the layout that feels most familiar before manually changing individual inputs.

  • Default: The remake's modern control scheme and the layout documented above.
  • DS1: A layout intended for players familiar with the original Dead Space.
  • DS2: A layout inspired by Dead Space 2.
  • Custom: Automatically shown after individual controls have been reassigned.

Because the same buttons perform different actions during exploration, aiming and zero gravity, test a custom setup in each gameplay state before committing to it.

Can You Remap the Controls in Dead Space?

Yes. Dead Space allows individual controller commands to be reassigned. The options menu also includes settings for stick sensitivity, trigger sensitivity, dead zones, camera speed, aim assistance, vibration and inverted camera axes.

Players can adjust or enable options such as Aim Toggle, Sprint Toggle, aim-assist friction, aim-assist magnetism, single-press quick-time events and automatic camera orientation toward the Locator path.

Useful Accessibility and Control Settings

  • Aim Toggle: Press Aim once instead of continuously holding the trigger.
  • Sprint Toggle: Changes sprinting from a held input to a toggle.
  • Aim Assistance: Helps keep the aiming lasers near an enemy target.
  • Aim Assist Friction: Slows reticle movement as it passes over a target.
  • Aim Assist Magnetism: Pulls the aim toward available targets.
  • Camera Sensitivity: Changes general turning speed.
  • Stick Dead Zones: Corrects drift or an unresponsive-feeling analogue stick.
  • Trigger Sensitivity: Changes how far a trigger must be pressed before registering.
  • Orient View to Locator Path: Turns the camera toward the displayed route.
  • Single-Press QTEs: Reduces repeated-button sequences to simpler inputs.
  • Menu Narration: Reads compatible menu elements aloud.
  • Content Warning: Provides warnings before selected disturbing scenes.
  • Vibration Strength: Adjusts or disables controller vibration.

Additional Control Notes

  • R1 / RB is context-sensitive: It performs melee normally, alternate fire while aiming and rolls right in zero gravity.
  • R2 / RT is also context-sensitive: It performs a stomp normally, shoots while aiming, throws Kinesis objects and aligns Isaac in zero gravity.
  • Circle / B changes while aiming: It uses a Med Pack during exploration and controls Kinesis while aiming.
  • Triangle / Y changes while aiming: It uses a Stasis Pack normally and fires Stasis while aiming.
  • Kinesis does not consume ammunition: Environmental projectiles are essential for efficient combat.
  • Weapon alternate fire varies: Check each weapon's description rather than assuming R1 or RB always deals direct damage.
  • The Locator follows the tracked mission: Change the active mission in the RIG when it points toward the wrong objective.
  • Zero-G Align is optional but useful: Use it whenever rolling or free flight makes the room difficult to understand.
  • Controls can be restored: The controller menu includes an option to reset altered bindings to their defaults.
