Screamer controls guide for PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X S and PC

Screamer does not control like a conventional arcade racer. Milestone's 2026 reboot gives you separate steering and drifting inputs, a semi-automatic Active Shift system, timed Boosts, defensive Shields, offensive Strikes and the extremely dangerous Overdrive state. At first it can feel like you are playing a racing game and a fighting game at the same time.

The key is its Twin Stick handling. The left stick steers the front of the car, while the right stick controls the drift. Rather than pressing a handbrake button and hoping the rear steps out at the correct angle, you continuously blend both sticks to shape the car through a corner.

The other half of the control scheme is the ECHO system. L1 or LB handles Active Shift and Boost, while R1 or RB handles Shield and Strike. Overdrive requires both stick buttons together. The same inputs therefore behave differently depending on whether you tap, hold or have enough Sync and Entropy available.

Screamer supports extensive controller remapping, so a customised layout may differ from the defaults above. The game is also available on PC, where keyboard inputs can be reassigned; the controller layout remains the clearest reference because Screamer's Twin Stick driving system is designed around analogue input.


How Twin Stick Driving Works

The most important thing to understand about Screamer is that the right stick is not a camera control during normal racing. It is a second driving input.

Left Stick Steers the Car

Use the left stick for ordinary direction changes and smaller corrections. On gentle bends, you may be able to maintain speed with little or no right-stick drift.

Right Stick Controls the Drift

Push the right stick toward the direction of the corner to rotate the car into a drift. A small input creates a shallower slide; pushing farther produces a much stronger angle.

Blend Both Sticks

Screamer becomes much easier once you stop thinking of steering and drifting as separate phases. Use both at once. Steering into the drift can tighten the angle, while carefully correcting against it helps straighten the car when the exit approaches.

Do Not Slam the Right Stick Fully Sideways

Maximum drift input is useful for tight hairpins, but it is excessive on many normal corners. Gentle analogue inputs preserve more speed and make the car easier to recover.


Accelerating

Hold R2 or RT to accelerate.

You Do Not Need Full Throttle Everywhere

Screamer is fast enough that briefly easing off the accelerator can produce a cleaner corner than forcing the car into an extreme drift.

Partial Throttle Helps Mid-Corner

When the car begins running wide, reduce throttle rather than immediately throwing in more drift angle. Small speed changes make a large difference at Screamer's extreme velocities.

Get Back on Power as the Car Straightens

The fastest exit normally comes from reducing the drift angle first and then returning to full acceleration. Remaining sideways longer than necessary sacrifices straight-line speed.


Braking

Use L2 or LT to brake. Holding it after slowing down can also reverse the vehicle when necessary.

Yes, You Actually Need the Brake

Twin Stick drifting does not replace braking. Tight corners and awkward sequences are much easier when you remove enough speed before asking the car to rotate.

Brake before the Most Severe Part of the Corner

Trying to rescue an overly fast entry with maximum drift often sends the car into the outside barrier. Brake while the car is relatively straight, then initiate the drift.

Use Brief Brake Inputs while Drifting

A small amount of braking can tighten your line when a drift begins running wide. It costs speed, but usually far less than hitting a wall.

Do Not Panic-Brake during Strike

Strike dramatically changes your speed and responsiveness. Plan the attack before activating it so you are not immediately forced into heavy braking.


Active Shift

Tap L1 or LB at the correct RPM to perform an Active Shift. Screamer's transmission will eventually upshift automatically, but a properly timed manual input is faster and also contributes to your ECHO economy.

Watch the Tachometer

As the revs approach the highlighted shift window, prepare to tap L1 or LB. The HUD gives a clear visual cue when the timing is right.

Listen to the Engine

Once you know a car, you can shift largely by sound. This keeps your attention on the next corner rather than the bottom of the screen.

Use Controller Feedback

On supported hardware, vibration and DualSense feedback provide additional cues. Learning the feel of an Active Shift makes the mechanic far less distracting.

Do Not Ignore Active Shift because the Gearbox Is Automatic

Automatic shifts eventually move the car into the next gear, but you lose the immediate timing reward and additional Sync generation. Active Shift is effectively part of Screamer's core racing rhythm rather than an optional manual-transmission mode.


How to Get a Fast Start

The shift input also matters before the race has properly begun.

Watch for the Starting Shift Prompt

During the countdown, pay attention to the tachometer and shift cue.

Tap L1 or LB near the Correct Moment

A properly timed starting shift gives you a noticeably stronger launch than simply holding the accelerator and waiting.

Do Not Stare at the Rival Cars

Your first few attempts are easier if you focus on the start indicator rather than trying to judge movement from the surrounding grid.


Understanding Sync

Sync is the blue side of Screamer's ECHO resource system. It powers your Boost and Shield.

You can increase Sync through strong racing, including correctly timed Active Shifts, sustained high-speed driving and slipstreaming opponents.

Do Not Let a Full Sync Gauge Sit Unused

Once your available bars are full, additional generation provides little benefit. Spend Sync intelligently so you can continue producing more.

Boost and Shield Compete for the Same Resource

Every bar spent on speed is one less bar available for defence. If a rival is sitting directly behind you with offensive resources ready, saving one bar can be more valuable than another Boost.

Using Sync Builds Entropy

Boosting and shielding are also how you move toward Screamer's offensive side. Spending Sync generates Entropy, creating a loop between racing and combat.


Boost Controls

Once you have enough Sync, hold L1 or LB to begin the Boost timing sequence and release the button at the desired moment.

Do Not Just Tap Boost

Boost contains a timing element. Holding the button brings up the Boost window, and your release determines the quality of the result.

Aim for a Perfect Boost

Release when the moving indicators line up with the smaller highlighted timing zone. A well-timed Perfect Boost is stronger and lasts longer than an ordinary one.

Boost out of Corners

One of the safest places to spend Sync is near the end of a drift. The Boost replaces speed lost in the slide and launches you into the next straight.

Avoid Boosting toward a Wall

Extra speed does not fix a bad trajectory. Straighten the car first unless you are deliberately using the Boost to help carry a controlled drift.


Shield Controls

Tap R1 or RB when you have sufficient Sync to deploy the Shield.

Watch Incoming Attack Warnings

The HUD warns you when an opponent is preparing a dangerous attack from behind. The threat indicator becomes more urgent as impact approaches.

Shield Late Rather than Early

Activating defence far before an attack arrives wastes the protected period and can interfere with resource generation. Wait until the threat is genuinely close.

A Successful Parry Is Extremely Valuable

If your Shield absorbs the incoming attack, the Sync spent on the defence can be refunded. Good Shield timing therefore protects your position without necessarily costing the resource permanently.

Do Not Keep Shielding without a Threat

Every unnecessary defensive use is Sync that could have become a Boost and additional Entropy.


Strike Controls

Hold R1 or RB when you have enough Entropy to charge a Strike. Strike propels the car violently forward and can KO an unshielded rival on contact.

Line Up before Committing

Strike is much less forgiving than a normal Boost. Position the nose of your car behind or alongside the intended target first.

Lead a Turning Opponent

If the rival is drifting through a bend, aim toward where the car will be when your Strike arrives rather than its current location.

Do Not Strike into an Active Shield

A shielded opponent can absorb the attack, wasting your Entropy and often ruining your momentum.

Strike Is Also a Movement Tool

Because it produces a violent burst of forward speed, Strike can sometimes recover momentum after a slow corner or rapidly close a gap. Combat is its primary purpose, but it can have racing value as well.

Cancel a Bad Attack when Possible

If the target moves away or the next wall is approaching too quickly, abandoning the attack is better than sacrificing the entire race for one KO attempt.


How to Activate Overdrive

Fill the Entropy gauge completely, then press L3 + R3 on PlayStation or LS + RS on Xbox.

Overdrive transforms the vehicle into an extremely fast offensive state. You receive a major performance increase and can KO vulnerable opponents through contact.

Do Not Activate It as Soon as It Becomes Available

The best time is usually a long straight or a simple section where several opponents are ahead of you.

Use the Initial Protection Aggressively

Overdrive begins with temporary protection, giving you an opportunity to cut through traffic and score KOs.

Respect the Wall Risk

After the protective period ends, touching the track boundary while Overdrive remains active can destroy your own car. A spectacular comeback can become an instant loss if you activate it before a technical sequence.

Brake Even in Overdrive

The enormous speed increase does not remove the need for corner preparation. Begin braking earlier than normal when a tight bend is approaching.


Why L1/LB and R1/RB Have Two Functions

Screamer intentionally uses tap-and-hold behavior to keep its complex racing and combat system reachable without removing your thumbs from the Twin Stick controls.

  • Tap L1 / LB: Active Shift.
  • Hold L1 / LB: Boost when Sync is available.
  • Tap R1 / RB: Shield.
  • Hold R1 / RB: Charge or prepare Strike when Entropy is available.
  • Press both sticks: Overdrive when Entropy is full.

This arrangement takes time to learn because R2/RT is also held for acceleration. If the shoulder layout feels uncomfortable, Screamer allows extensive remapping.


Can You Change Screamer to One-Stick Steering?

Yes. The control settings allow steering and drifting to be remapped, including configurations that place both functions on the same stick.

One Stick Is Easier to Learn

Players coming from Need for Speed, Burnout or Forza may find a combined steering layout more immediately familiar.

Twin Stick Gives More Fine Control

The default system lets you separately control directional steering and drift intensity. Once learned, this gives you more freedom to modify a slide without completely changing the direction of the car.

Try Swapping the Sticks Too

Some players prefer drift on the left stick and steering adjustments on the right. Screamer's remapping system makes experimentation worthwhile.


Recommended Controller Remapping

The default R1/RB position for Shield and Strike can be awkward if you normally use your index finger for R2/RT acceleration.

Consider Moving Shield / Strike to a Face Button

A spare face button can make combat more comfortable because you can continue holding the accelerator while preparing an attack.

Do Not Sacrifice Easy Access to Active Shift

L1/LB is pressed frequently. Moving it somewhere inconvenient can make every lap harder.

Keep Overdrive Somewhere Deliberate

Accidental Overdrive activation can be disastrous, so avoid a remap that is easy to trigger unintentionally.

Test Changes in Time Attack

Do not learn a new layout in a competitive Team Race. Use a low-pressure mode until the muscle memory feels natural.


PC Keyboard Controls

Screamer supports keyboard input on PC and allows bindings to be customised. Because the game was built around analogue Twin Stick control and the PC mapping can be extensively changed, check Settings > Controls for the exact keyboard layout on your installation.

If you use keyboard, keep steering and drift on separate, easily reached key pairs. Screamer frequently requires steering, drifting, accelerating and activating ECHO functions within the same second, so a comfortable custom layout is more important than copying someone else's binding.

Controller Is Worth Trying on PC

Analogue drift intensity is one of Screamer's defining mechanics. A controller gives you much finer control over shallow and deep drift angles than a digital key.


Wheel Support

Screamer received expanded racing-wheel support after launch. Supported hardware includes selected Logitech, Thrustmaster and Fanatec wheels and pedal sets.

Remember the Game Was Designed around Twin Stick

Wheel support does not turn Screamer into a simulation. Its combat inputs, drifting system, Active Shift and ECHO mechanics remain fundamental.

Support has been improved through patches, so verify your specific wheel and pedal hardware before spending time building a custom profile.


Game Modes and How the Controls Change Your Approach

Screamer includes Tournament, Race!, Team Race, Time Attack, Checkpoint, Score Challenge, Overdrive Challenge and online competition. The buttons remain familiar, but your priorities change dramatically.

Time Attack

Forget combat and concentrate on Twin Stick precision, Active Shifts, racing lines and Boost timing.

Team Race

KOs matter alongside finishing position, so Shield and Strike become much more important.

Overdrive Challenge

This is excellent practice for controlling the enormous speed and wall risk associated with Overdrive.

Checkpoint

Efficient cornering and avoiding unnecessary slides generally matter more than aggressive combat.

The unusual controls are not a gimmick sitting on top of the racing system; they are the racing system. Twin Stick input lets you shape every drift, while Sync and Entropy create a constant decision between speed, defence and attack.

If the default layout causes hand strain, remap it. Screamer gives you enough flexibility to build a more comfortable configuration without abandoning its core mechanics.
