LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight - Controls

LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight controls guide for PlayStation Xbox and PC

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight gives Batman and his allies a surprisingly broad control set. You are not only punching henchpeople and smashing LEGO scenery: you can counter attacks, grapple between rooftops, glide across Gotham, aim character-specific gadgets, summon vehicles, pilot drones and switch between heroes with completely different equipment.

The default layout keeps Batman's most frequently used actions on the face buttons. Square attacks, Triangle interacts or counters, Cross jumps and Circle dodges. The shoulder buttons handle gadgets, grappling and special abilities, allowing you to fight or move without repeatedly opening a radial menu.

This guide explains the default PlayStation controls shown in the in-game controller menu, the matching Xbox buttons, contextual actions, vehicle commands, gadget minigames and drone controls. Because the game supports controller remapping, your personal layout may differ if you have changed a binding.

Movement and Camera Controls

Use the left stick to move and the right stick to control the camera. The game frequently mixes street-level exploration with vertical routes, so camera direction is important when choosing grapple points, ledges and glide paths.

Look Up before Searching for a Door

Many Gotham objectives are reached from balconies, rooftops, broken windows or elevated grapple points. If the direct entrance appears blocked, move the camera upward and scan the building's exterior.

Centre the Camera before a Difficult Jump

Face the intended landing area before pressing Cross or A. This reduces accidental jumps toward nearby scenery and makes the following glide easier to control.

Use Detect while Exploring

Press R3 or the right stick to activate the Detect command. It helps you identify useful environmental elements, puzzle components and points of interest that may blend into Gotham's detailed LEGO scenery.

How to Sprint

Press L3 or the left stick while moving to sprint.

Sprint across Open Streets

Sprinting is useful when closing the distance to a crime, moving between cover or reaching a vehicle before nearby enemies regroup.

Do Not Sprint past Puzzle Clues

Some objectives require you to examine a small device, track or interactive object. Slow down and use Detect when the objective marker stops moving.

Combine Sprinting with Grappling

A fast ground approach followed by a grapple is often quicker than repeatedly jumping against the side of a building.

Attacking

Press Square on PlayStation or X on Xbox to perform a standard attack. Repeated presses create an attack chain, while directional input helps your character move between nearby targets.

Do Not Mash without Watching Enemies

The combat system rewards awareness. Continue an attack chain while watching for counter prompts, shielded enemies and opponents preparing unblockable moves.

Change Targets through Movement

Tilt the left stick toward another enemy while attacking to keep the combo moving across the group instead of repeatedly striking empty space.

Use Gadgets to Extend a Fight

A well-placed gadget can stun, pull or disable an enemy, letting you continue attacking before the group surrounds you.

Smash the Environment after Combat

LEGO scenery often contains studs, build pieces or hidden interactions. Clear immediate threats first, then break suspicious props around the encounter area.

Interacting and Countering

Triangle or Y serves two important functions: interacting with objects and countering enemy attacks.

Watch for the Counter Prompt

When an enemy telegraphs an attack, press Triangle or Y at the indicated moment. A successful counter protects your combo and may reposition the attacker.

Do Not Press Counter Too Early

Repeatedly tapping before the prompt can interrupt your rhythm. React to the visual warning rather than guessing.

Move Close to Interactive Objects

If Triangle or Y does not activate a console, clue or lever, adjust your position and turn the camera toward the highlighted part.

Remember That Context Changes the Button

The same input may speak to a character, activate machinery, enter a vehicle or counter an enemy. The current on-screen prompt takes priority.

Jumping and Gliding

Press Cross or A to jump. Once the relevant character and traversal ability are available, the same command can initiate or maintain a glide.

Jump before Gliding

Gain height from a rooftop, ledge or grapple point before opening the glide. Starting too close to street level gives you little time to steer.

Use Gentle Camera Adjustments

Large changes in direction can waste height. Turn gradually when aiming for a distant rooftop.

Look for Grapple Points during a Glide

You do not always need to reach the ground. Grappling to a higher ledge can extend traversal and restore elevation.

Cancel an Unsafe Descent

Use Dodge or Drop when you need to abandon a contextual aerial action or descend toward a safer landing.

Dodging and Dropping

Press Circle or B to dodge during combat. The same button can act as Drop when hanging from or moving across certain elevated objects.

Dodge through Heavy Attacks

When an attack cannot be countered normally, move away or dodge to the enemy's side rather than remaining directly in front.

Dodge toward Open Space

Rolling into a wall or another enemy can leave you trapped. Use the camera to identify the safest direction first.

Use Drop Carefully above Gotham

Check what is below before cancelling a grapple, ledge hang or traversal action. A lower balcony may be safer than falling all the way to the street.

Grappling

Press L1 or LB to use the grapple when a valid target is available.

Use Grappling for Height, Not Only Distance

The fastest route across Gotham often begins by reaching a tall roof and then gliding toward the destination.

Scan Building Corners

Grapple points may appear on roof edges, signs, platforms and architectural details rather than directly above Batman.

Grapple away from Crowds

If a street fight becomes messy, gaining immediate elevation gives you time to reassess, switch gadgets or approach from another angle.

Try Another Character

Traversal options can differ between heroes. When one route appears awkward, another character's equipment may provide a cleaner solution.

Aiming and Using Gadgets

Hold L2 or LT to aim the selected gadget and press R2 or RT to use it.

Choose the Gadget before Entering Combat

Use the D-Pad to prepare the gadget you expect to need. Swapping while surrounded is slower and makes it easier to lose your combo.

Aim at Environmental Targets

Gadgets are not limited to enemies. Look for switches, cables, anchors, breakable locks and puzzle elements.

Use the Batarang to Interrupt

A quick ranged hit can stop an enemy's action, create room or begin an encounter from a safer position.

Use Pulling Gadgets to Control Spacing

Abilities such as Batman's Batclaw can bring a distant target into melee range or remove an enemy from a protected position.

Release Aim when You Need Mobility

Do not remain locked in an aiming stance after the gadget has served its purpose. Return to movement, counters and dodges.

Using Focus

Press R1 or RB to activate the current character's Focus function when available.

Treat Focus as a Limited Tactical Tool

Use it when several threats overlap, a difficult enemy needs to be controlled or an objective creates a dangerous combat phase.

Learn Each Character's Version

Focus is not necessarily identical for every hero. Test it after switching characters and read the ability description in the progression or equipment menu.

Do Not Save It Forever

A resource that remains full through every encounter provides no benefit. Use Focus when it can prevent damage or accelerate a difficult fight.

Switching Characters

Use the assigned D-Pad direction to swap characters.

The playable roster includes Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Jim Gordon, Catwoman and Talia al Ghul. Each has unique skills, gadgets, combos and a separate progression tree.

Switch for the Problem, Not Only the Costume

A puzzle may call for hacking, cables, foam, ranged attacks or another specialised ability. Change heroes when the current toolkit does not match the environment.

Test Every New Character

Spend a few minutes learning their attack speed, traversal method and gadget range before taking them into a difficult mission.

Use Co-op Roles

In local co-op, one player can manage enemies while the other handles a nearby puzzle or environmental target.

Selecting Primary and Secondary Gadgets

The Controller menu provides separate commands for primary and secondary gadgets. These are assigned to D-Pad shortcuts by default.

Keep a Combat Gadget and Utility Gadget Ready

A useful setup gives you one option for immediate enemy control and another for puzzles or traversal.

Watch the HUD after Switching

Confirm that the intended gadget appears before holding Aim Gadget. Similar icons can be easy to confuse during a busy fight.

Remember Character Loadouts Differ

Changing heroes also changes available equipment. Do not assume the same D-Pad direction will produce an identical tool for every character.

Map and Pause Controls

Press the touchpad or View button to open the map. Press Options or the Menu button to pause.

Place a Destination before Driving

A marker reduces unnecessary turns and lets you focus on traffic, ramps and pursuing enemies.

Check Vertical Position

An objective may be above or below your current street. Study nearby building shapes and access routes instead of circling the marker at ground level.

Use Pause to Review Bindings

The full controller menu is especially helpful after unlocking a new gadget, vehicle action or drone upgrade.

Vehicle Controls

Brake / Reverse L2 LT
Exit Vehicle Circle B
Boost Square X
Rockets Triangle Y
Change Camera View D-Pad D-Pad
Horn / Siren Press L3 Press Left Stick
Vehicle Grapple L1 LB
Detect Press R3 Press Right Stick

Accelerating and Braking

Use R2 or RT to accelerate and L2 or LT to brake or reverse. Cross or A is also available as an alternative accelerate input in the default controller configuration.

Brake before the Turn

Reducing speed before steering produces a cleaner corner than braking halfway through the turn.

Use Reverse to Realign

When the vehicle becomes trapped against a wall or LEGO prop, reverse briefly and turn away instead of holding acceleration.

Choose the Comfortable Accelerate Input

Some players prefer a trigger for finer control, while others prefer the face button. The controller menu allows you to rebind either option.

Boosting

Press Square or X to activate boost when the current vehicle supports it.

Boost on Straight Roads

Using it immediately before a tight corner often sends the vehicle into traffic, barriers or destructible scenery.

Save Boost for Chases

A short burst is especially useful when pursuing a target, escaping an enemy vehicle or reaching a ramp.

Do Not Fight the Steering

Small stick adjustments are easier to control at high speed than holding the stick fully to one side.

Vehicle Weapons

Triangle or Y fires rockets in vehicles equipped with them. L1 or LB may activate a vehicle-mounted grapple.

Line Up before Firing

Turn the vehicle toward the target instead of wasting rockets while sharply changing direction.

Use Rockets on Obstacles and Groups

Vehicle weapons are ideal for clearing roadblocks, hostile vehicles or clustered enemies.

Watch Nearby Civilians and Scenery

An explosion can create additional obstacles and make the next section of the route harder to navigate.

Summoning and Exiting Vehicles

Use the assigned D-Pad direction to summon a vehicle and press Circle or B to exit.

Summon on a Clear Road

Avoid calling a large Batmobile inside a narrow alley or beside dense street furniture.

Slow Down before Exiting

Come to a controlled stop when possible so the character is not left beside moving traffic or enemies.

Use Respawn when Truly Stuck

The vehicle controls include a respawn command. Use it when the car is overturned or trapped rather than repeatedly accelerating against the same obstacle.

Gadget and Minigame Controls

Minigame Action PlayStation Xbox
Select Previous L1 LB
Select Next R1 RB
Accept / Select Cross A
Cancel Circle B
Zoom In R2 RT
Zoom Out L2 LT
Action 1 Square X
Action 2 Triangle Y

Read the Objective before Pressing Action

Action 1 and Action 2 are contextual labels. Their purpose changes between gadgets and minigames, so use the on-screen instruction instead of assuming Square always performs the same operation.

Use Shoulder Buttons to Browse

L1 and R1 move between choices without forcing you to drag a cursor across every option.

Zoom in on Fine Details

When a puzzle includes small symbols or mechanical components, use R2 and L2 to inspect the relevant area before confirming.

Drone Controls

Drone Action PlayStation Xbox
Move Drone Left Stick Left Stick
Move Camera Right Stick Right Stick
Ascend R2 RT
Descend L2 LT
Cancel / Exit Circle B
Main Function Square X
Upgrade Function 1 Triangle Y
Upgrade Function 2 Cross A

Gain Height before Moving Forward

Ascending first can reveal vents, rooftops and puzzle targets that remain hidden at character height.

Move Slowly in Confined Areas

Small stick inputs are safer when flying through vents, machinery or narrow interior spaces.

Test Upgrades after Unlocking Them

Triangle or Y and Cross or A activate upgrade functions when available. Their exact effects depend on the drone and unlocked progression.

Exit When the Route Is Clear

Once the drone has opened a path or completed its objective, press Circle or B and continue with the character rather than searching areas the drone cannot affect.

How to Remap Controls

Open the pause menu, enter Settings and select the Controller tab. Highlight an action, choose its current input and press the replacement button.

Prioritise Frequently Used Commands

Attack, counter, dodge, jump, grapple and gadget use should remain comfortable during long sessions.

Avoid Conflicting Contexts

Some buttons already perform several contextual actions. Assigning too many important functions to one input may make prompts confusing.

Test Character, Vehicle and Drone Layouts

Changing one section does not guarantee every gameplay mode will feel comfortable. Enter a safe open-world area and test each category.

Use Reset to Defaults if Necessary

The Controller menu includes a Reset to Defaults option, allowing you to restore the original layout if a custom setup becomes difficult to remember.

Final Control Advice

Start by memorising the core combat loop: Square or X to attack, Triangle or Y to counter, Circle or B to dodge and Cross or A to jump. Once those inputs feel natural, add L1 or LB for grappling and the L2/R2 or LT/RT combination for gadgets.

Do not try to solve every encounter using Batman alone. Character switching is part of the control system, not merely a cosmetic option. Different heroes bring different gadgets, traversal tools and puzzle solutions, and learning when to swap is as important as learning the buttons.
