The Hunt: Showdown 1896 controls take a little longer to learn than those of a typical shooter. Shooting is only one part of surviving. You also need fast access to Dark Sight, tools, consumables, melee attacks, pings and the map while paying attention to everything making noise around you.
This guide covers the essential default controls for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, along with the differences between Hunter and Gunslinger control styles and several inputs that are easy to overlook. Hunt allows controls and controller settings to be adjusted, so a customised setup may differ from the defaults shown here.

PC players should consider adjusting bindings once the basics feel familiar. Hunt regularly asks you to swap between a firearm, healing item, melee tool and throwable under pressure, so important equipment should be accessible without looking away from the fight.

Hunter vs Gunslinger Controls
Hunt: Showdown 1896 offers two major control philosophies: Hunter and Gunslinger. This choice changes how your weapon is handled and how aiming feels.
Gunslinger behaves more like a conventional first person shooter. Your firearm remains ready and the route into aiming down sights is immediate, which often feels more familiar to players coming from other shooters.
Hunter introduces another weapon handling state. Your weapon can remain lowered until you deliberately ready it, giving you more control over whether your Hunter is visibly preparing to fire.
Neither scheme magically improves accuracy. Pick the one that makes aiming, melee and movement feel predictable to you, then avoid constantly switching between them while you are still developing muscle memory.
How Dark Sight Works
Dark Sight is one of Hunt's defining mechanics. It helps you locate Clues and interact with several supernatural systems during a Bounty Hunt.
After carrying a Bounty Token, Dark Sight Boost can reveal nearby enemy Hunters for a limited amount of time. Current Hunt separates entering Dark Sight from deliberately activating the Boost, allowing you to use normal Dark Sight without automatically wasting those valuable seconds.
With the default setup, Dark Sight Boost can be activated through the relevant aim input while Dark Sight is active. Hunt also provides an Auto Dark Sight Boost setting if you prefer different behavior.
How to Ping Enemies and Locations
The ping system is one of the fastest ways to communicate without speaking. A marker can warn teammates about an enemy position or draw attention to useful objects and locations.
Hunt's newer ping and compass system supports contextual markers, making it useful for identifying things such as traps and Ammo Boxes rather than relying entirely on voice communication.
Use precise pings. Marking the window where you actually saw a Hunter is far more useful than repeatedly marking the entire compound.
How Jumping and Vaulting Work
Jump and Vault share the same basic input by default. A normal press can jump, while approaching an appropriate fence, window or obstacle allows your Hunter to vault across it.
Be careful around compounds. Vaulting through a window or landing on metal can create a very different amount of noise from quietly moving through an open doorway. In Hunt, movement is also information.
How to Reload Without Accidentally Interacting on Controller
Controller players can occasionally face a situation where Reload and an interaction compete for the same contextual input. Hunt includes a useful force reload method for precisely this situation.
Open or hold the equipment wheel input and press Reload to give the reload action priority over nearby interactions. This can prevent an unwanted interaction when all you really wanted was another round in the chamber.
How Tools and Consumables Work
Weapons are only part of your loadout. Tools cover reusable utility such as melee equipment and other tactical options, while Consumables include items that are expended through use.
On controller, the equipment wheel provides access to these items and quick access slots can reduce the time required to reach favorites. PC players can use the appropriate numbered equipment slots or cycle between items.
Place equipment you use during fights somewhere easy to reach. Searching through your inventory while another Hunter is pushing the doorway rarely ends well.
Centered or Lowered Crosshair
Hunt: Showdown 1896 supports both a centered crosshair and Hunt's original lowered crosshair position. This is a preference rather than something every player needs to change.
Players coming from other competitive shooters may find centered aiming immediately familiar. Longtime Hunt players may prefer the original position. Test both and keep the option that feels natural instead of copying somebody else's settings.
Remember Bullet Drop at Long Range
Hunt: Showdown 1896 introduced bullet drop to its gunplay. At sufficient range, you may need to account for the projectile falling rather than placing the sights directly where you would at shorter distances.
The relevant drop behavior depends on the weapon and ammunition. Weapon information in the menu helps you understand the characteristics of what you are carrying.
The Controls Worth Learning First
Do not try to memorise every possible action before your first Bounty Hunt. Become comfortable with aiming, firing, melee, Dark Sight, reload, interact, crouch, equipment selection and ping first.
Once those actions become automatic, learn faster item selection and refine your sensitivity. Hunt punishes hesitation, but it rewards deliberate inputs. The objective is not to press buttons faster. It is to know exactly which button you need before the other Hunter does.
