GRIS Controls Guide

The GRIS controls are deliberately simple. There is no combat system, inventory to manage or complicated collection of button combinations. Instead, Gris gradually learns abilities that change how a small set of movement controls works.

This guide covers the main controls for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC, then explains how jumping, Heavy, swimming and singing change as you progress. Some abilities are unavailable when you first begin, so do not worry if a button appears to do nothing early in the story.

GRIS PC Keyboard Controls

How Jumping and Double Jump Work

Jump is the movement action you will use most frequently. Early platforming only requires a normal jump, but Gris later gains the ability to jump a second time while airborne.

Do not rush the second input. When crossing a wide gap, use the first jump to gain distance and save the second until you need additional height or reach. The extra jump also makes returning to previously inaccessible platforms possible.

How to Use the Heavy Ability

Heavy transforms Gris's dress into a solid block. The ability lets you resist powerful wind and smash through certain fragile surfaces. On Switch, for example, Heavy is activated with Y.

You can also combine Heavy with a jump. Get above a breakable surface, jump and activate Heavy while airborne to come down with greater force. If a suspicious floor refuses to break while you are standing on it, try approaching it from above.

How Swimming Controls Work

Once Gris enters underwater areas, movement becomes much more fluid. The normal movement input steers her through the water, while the jump button becomes a swimming boost.

This is especially important during faster underwater sequences. Rather than searching for a new sprint button, remember that an existing control has changed function to suit the environment.

How to Sing in GRIS

Sing is one of the final abilities Gris gains. Once unlocked, holding the Sing control allows her voice to interact with parts of the world, including certain flowers, creatures and environmental elements.

If you encounter something earlier that looks as though it should respond but nothing you currently possess works, remember the location. GRIS occasionally shows you a secret before giving you the ability needed to reach or activate it.

Why Some GRIS Controls Do Nothing at First

GRIS introduces abilities through progression. Heavy, Double Jump and Sing are not all available from the beginning, even though their buttons exist in the control scheme.

There is usually no need to assume your controller is malfunctioning. Continue exploring and the game will introduce each important ability when the story reaches the appropriate point.

Does GRIS Have Combat Controls?

No. GRIS is built around exploration, light puzzles and platforming rather than fighting enemies. Nomada Studio describes it as an experience without danger, frustration or death, so there are no attack, block or weapon controls to learn.

That simplicity is part of the design. Master movement, learn what each new dress ability does and pay attention to how the environment reacts. GRIS rarely needs more buttons than that.
